Tips to do the Inca Jungle trail to Machu Picchu

Before arriving in Cusco, it is important to know that the city has a temperate climate with temperatures fluctuating between 14°C and 35°C throughout the year.
Cusco also has a rainy season (December to March). On the other hand Machu Picchu has a semi-tropical climate, being the jungle has warm and humid days and cold nights. The rainy season in Machu Picchu is from November to March, so you should be careful because the road conditions are slippery.

Before your trip, it is necessary to exercise for about 1 hour, walking at home or jogging lightly so you can get there and do not have problems with the altitude.
The best months to do Inca Jungle and visit Machu Picchu are from April to October since it is dry season, where there is no rain.
The high season (where there are more tourists) is from June to August, this is because in June the Inti Raymi Festival is celebrated as well as the city of Cusco is celebrating its anniversary.
It is essential to book in advance because if you want to climb Huayna Picchu, there are only 400 spaces available which are separated by shifts.
Altitude sickness is serious and can ruin your trip. So the biggest mistake you can make is to fly directly to Cuzco (3326m/10,910ft) and expect to do the trek the next day. You need to give yourself a few days to adjust to the altitude.
It is always advisable to bring a rain poncho, as the weather in Cusco is generally unpredictable.
Be sure to have your passport stamped with the Machu Picchu stamp, this process can be done at the entrance, in the office just after the entrance.
Only small backpacks under 20 kg are allowed into Machu Picchu.
At the entrance gate to Mchu Picchu there is a pharmacy and a medical service available. The service is operated by the Pardo and San Jose Clinic (from Cusco).
If you are afraid of heights, it is not recommended to climb Huayna Picchu. At the top, the path is very narrow and very steep.

The Inca Jungle trail 3 days

It is one of the most popular alternative treks that reach Machu Picchu, this hike is full of adrenaline and adventure and combines adventure sports such as hiking, mountain biking, zip line and rafting in one of the most important rivers of the Incas. The hike goes through the Abra Malaga and continues by bike to the village of Santa Maria, in the afternoon we will do rafting on the Urubamba River (difficulty level: III, IV or V depending on the time of year). On the second day we will hike to the village of Santa Teresa and the hot springs of Cocalmayo, where you can enjoy a relaxing bath. On the third day we will zip-line and hike from the hydroelectric plant to Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

01:

CUSCO - SANTA MARIA - SANTA TERESA (biking and rafting)

Our adventure begins at 6:30 a.m. when we pick you up at your hotel, we will go in our private transportation for about 90 minutes through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing through Chinchero, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo, we will rest for about 15 minutes, and then we will go to Abra Malaga (4350 masl), where we will begin our cycling adventure through the high jungle. Our guides will prepare everything for our protection and will give us the necessary indications. Our mountain biking activity will last 3 hours until we reach the area of Wamanmarca, we will take a short break and then board our transport to Santa Teresa where we will have our lunch. Then we can do our rafting activity in the Vilcanota river, as well as enjoy the hot springs in Cocalmayo. At night we will enjoy a good rest to have plenty of energy for the next day.

02:

SANTA TERESA – MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO – MACHU PICCHU (ZIP LINE - Hike)

Our adventure begins at 7:00 am, after tasting a delicious breakfast, we will have the option to do the extra activity of Zipline. We will hike for 3 hours until we reach the hydroelectric plant, where we will have time to rest and have lunch. After lunch we will hike for 3 hours in the middle of dense vegetation, accompanied by the train tracks until we reach Machu Picchu Pueblo. Upon arrival we will go to our hotel to check in and then have the last dinner of our tour, it is important to note that our guide will give us all the necessary indications for the visit to Machu Picchu.

03:

MACHU PICCHU PUEBLO – MACHU PICCHU – CUSCO

At 4:30 am we will start our hike to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, the hike takes about 2 hours approximately to the entrance gate. In the time of 2 hours we will have our guided tour of this beautiful Inca city, then we will do some walks and take many pictures. Once back in the village of Machu Picchu, you will have time to do some free activity, all this before the departure of the train back to Ollantaytambo. We will board the train, which will take us to Ollantaytambo station, where our transportation will be waiting for us to return to your hotel in Cusco.

Machu Picchu to Cusco

Return to Cusco by Train

You can visit Machu Picchu with more time, in case you plan to hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain you will have all the time you need to do your hikes at your leisure. The return to Cusco is done following the previous route.

Return to Cusco by bus

Following this return option the times will be shorter, and if you have decided to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you will have to do it in a more hurried way to make the hike to the Hydroelectric at 2:00 pm. There we will take our private transportation to Cusco which will take us a time of 6 hours.
