The trip to Choquequirao Trek 7 Days to Machupicchu

To start the trek to Choquequirao, the last refuge of the Incas, we leave early in the morning in a private transport from Cusco, heading to the district of San Pedro de Cachora. We take the main road from Cusco to Abancay, with a detour at Ramal, where we take a dirt road for 16 km to the village of Cachora, while accompanied by a beautiful panorama of landscapes. San Pedro de Cachora has a varied climate, characterized by a rainy season from November to March and a clear, dry season from April to October. Cachora is located at 2903 masl, with impressive views of the landscape, highlighting the nearby snow-capped peak “Padreyoc”. The views are very inspiring and breathtaking as we travel through an amazing variety of ecological zones, from the cultivated valleys of the Andes, down through an arid and hot canyon with Capoc, Cactus and Agave trees, and up through a region of lush rainforest, under the towering snow-capped peaks of the Vilcabamba mountain range. From the town of Chiquisqa, the road to Choquequirao descends steeply to the bottom of the Apurimac canyon to 1500m, where Playa Rosalina is located. From there we begin our ascent to the Inca city. We arrive at Rosalina Beach at 1550m, 19km from Cachora with its banks bathed by the torrential Apurimac River. A suspension bridge crosses to the other side, where the trail continues its perpetual ascent. The small villages we will pass through are Santa Rosa where we can enjoy the “Cambrai”, a delicious marinated drink made with sugar cane, and then to Marapata, near Choquequirao. From there we walk about an hour and 30 minutes to our campsite in Choquequirao, where we will spend the night.

Itinerary

01:

CUSCO – CAPULIYOC – CHIKISKA – PLAYA ROSALINAS

We pick you up from your Hotel at 4:00 am, we go with our private transportation to the town of Capuliyoc (3150 masl ). Our trip takes approximately 4 hours, where we can enjoy the first views of the villages, valleys and snow-capped peaks. Our porters and horses will be waiting for us to help us in our excursion. Once at the Capuliyoc viewpoint, we will take advantage of the great view of the Apurimac canyon and the snow-capped Padreyoc (5571 masl). Then we will start our hike through a descent of approx 3 hours to reach the town of Chiquisca for lunch. Afterwards, we resume our hike downhill to the village of Playa Rosalinda (1900 masl) where a delicious dinner awaits us and where we will camp and enjoy the tropical tranquility. Lodging: Camping. Climate: warm and sunny. Hiking time: 5 hours.

02:

PLAYA ROSALINAS – MARANPATA – CHOQUEQUIRAO

Very early on day 2 we will cross the river by a pedestrian bridge. We will start our hike uphill all morning until we reach Marampata, where we will have lunch. The hike after lunch will not be so steep when we are close to the valley that houses the Choquequirao complex (3100 masl). We will camp near the archaeological site and explore the surrounding area. Lodging: Camping. Climate: Warm and cold at night. Hiking time: 7 hours.

03:

CHOQUEQUIRAO – PINCHIUNUYOC

We will be able to complete the visit of this exceptional archaeological site and rest until lunchtime. In the afternoon we will start the hike uphill to the remains of Pinchiunuyoc where we will camp. Lodging: Campground, Pinchiunuyoc 2600 masl. Climate: Warm during the day, windy and cold at night. Hiking time: 7 hours

04:

Pinchiunuyoc - Rio Blanco - Maizal

After breakfast, we will hike for 2 hours down to the Blanco River (1990masl) where we will rest for a while. then we will start a long uphill approach. 4 hours to the village of Maizal. Along the way, we will be able to appreciate the great diversity of microclimates, flora and fauna and beautiful landscapes. Here we have lunch and after a short rest we resume our hike until we reach Maizal where we set up our tents to rest. Alojamiento: Camp. Climate: Warm and humid. Hiking time: 7 hours.

05:

Maizal - Yanama - Totora - Lucmabamba

We started the hike at 7:00 a.m. for about 3 hours along the edge of the jungle until we reached the Victoria mine. Following our trip for 1 hour we will arrive at the Victoria pass (4130 masl). After the beautiful panoramic view, we continue along the Inca trail made of stone steps to the Victoria mine and continue downhill to the village of Yanama where we have lunch. Then we take a collective bus to Lucmabamba. During the tour we can enjoy beautiful landscapes surrounded by snow-capped mountains and waterfalls. Lodging: Campground, Totora 2900 masl. Weather: Cold and windy. Hiking time: 9 hours.

06:

Lucmacbamba - Llactapata - Aguas Calientes

We begin our hike along the ancient Inca trail, climbing through a misty forest for about 3 hours. We cross the Puncuyoc pass and continue to the archaeological site of Llactapata located at 2700 masl. From there we enjoy the unique perspective of the Inka citadel of Machu Picchu. We resume our descent to the hydroelectric plant where we can rest and have lunch. Then we continue our way along the railroad line admiring the flora and fauna that surrounds Machu Picchu. Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes we will spend the night and enjoy the beautiful sunset of the town adorned with beautiful Inca statues. Lodging: Hostel in Aguas Calientes. Climate: Warm. Hiking time: 8 hours.

Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

After a great journey across the inter-Andean valleys that leads us the choquequira trek 7 days, we will visit one of the most famous cities of the ancient world, 8 LOST CITIES IN TIME by National Geographic This day will be our visit to the Inka city of “Machupicchu” we will have the option to walk for an hour and a half to Machu Picchu village (2400m), or we can also take the bus ($ 24 dollars up/down). Once in the archaeological park our guide will start the guided tour of the Inca city of Machu Picchu. We will have a couple of hours to rest and take pictures and then return to the town of Aguas Calientes, then take the train to Ollantaytambo where a car will be waiting to take you back to the hotel in Cusco.
